The Sunbury Geographic Indication was declared by the authority of the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation in 2000. It is a legally defined district that has international recognition based on history, uniformity of topography (50-300m elevation) and of product. The wine labeled as from the Sunbury Region must contain 85% fruit grown in the Sunbury Region.
It is a cool climate offering winter dominant rainfall 550-800mm and a spring bias, autumn frosts worse than in spring, moderate to severe wind, and warm dry autumn which minimises risk of fungal diseases and ensures cool dry growing conditions that allows slow development of intense fruit flavours. Mean January temperature ranges 19.0-20.9C, 7.8 hours/day bright sunshine.
Harvest varies from late March to mid-May.
