ABOUT THE SUNBURY WINE REGION

Just beyond Melbourne Airport are the city’s closest vineyards: in the suburbs of Keilor, Bulla, Clarkefield and Sunbury, Diggers Rest, Rockbank and Parwan near Melton, and in Bacchus Marsh. The names roll out a temptation to take an easy wine-buying drive where you’ll be able to discuss with its maker at cellar door how the wine is formed from the soil and crafted in the cellar.

Some of these vineyards were first planted in the 1860s (replanted in the 1980s), and retain original bluestone winery buildings. The new broad acre vineyards on the red soil west of Melbourne feature cellars of dramatic new design.
